About the Artist:
Joseph Stany-Gauthier (1883-1969) was a French painter, sculptor, art historian, museum curator and art professor. He is also variously known as: Joseph Gauthier, Joseph Stanislas Gauthier and Stany Gauthier. He graduated from l’Etat pour l’enseignement in decorative composition.
Stany-Gauthier painted Brittany port scenes, boats, seascapes, cathedrals, landscapes and Bretons’ daily lives in towns and rural settings. He was also Curator of the Musée du Château de Nantes from 1922 until 1969 and a professor at thel’Ecole des Beaux-arts in Nantes. [DES-02/16]
