About the Artist
Alan Lee (b. 1947) is a British book illustrator and movie conceptual designer. Watercolor is the most common medium in his work, along with pencil for his sketches.
Lee has illustrated several fantasy books, notably several works of J.R.R. Tolkien, such as the centenary edition of The Lord of the Rings as well as books by Robert Holdstock, David Day, Michael Palin, Joan Aiken, Peter Dickinson, Rosemary Sutcliff, Mervyn Peake and Adrian Mitchell.
Lee and John Howe were the lead concept artists of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies and Lee was contacted by former director Guillermo del Toro to keep continuity of design for the upcoming Hobbit films. Lee has also worked as a conceptual designer on the films Legend, Erik the Viking, King Kong and the television mini-series Merlin. [DES-04/12]
