The caption translates as: “From now on pork-butchers will be killing their pigs with the new bullet of fulminate from Mr. Devisme, the projectile offering the advantage of killing and smoking the animal… both at the same time…”
F.P. Devisme of Paris, was a French arms manufacturer of the period.
About the Artist
Cham, [pen name of Charles-Henri Amédée, comte de Noé], France, (1818-1879). Charles-Henri Amédée, comte de Noé or Amédée de Noé was a French cartoonist , caricaturist and lithographer who adopted the pen name ‘Cham’ in 1840.
For thirty years Cham was on the staff of the famous Le Charivari with such worthies as Daumier, Philipon, Gavarni and Grandvilie – all honored figures in the history of caricature. Later he drew for Punch and the Illustrated London News.
