About the Artist:
Joseph Christian Leyendecker (1874-1951), was a U.S. commercial art illustrator. Born in Germany, Leyendecker and his family came to Chicago in 1882. After working as a full-time staff artist at the engraving house of J. Manz & Company , he attending the Chicago Art Institute. Leyendecker went to Paris in 1896 to study at the Académie Julian under the tutelage of Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905).
Returning to the U.S., Leyendecker began lucrative long-term working relationships with advertising companies, manufactures and the publishing industry. His association with both Collier’s Magazineand the Saturday Evening Post were his most prolific area, painting a total of 48 covers for the former magazine and 322 for the latter, and this work helped define the modern magazine cover as a unique art form.
His most iconic commercial art commissions include the ‘Arrow Collar Man’ for Cluett, Peabody & Co. to advertise their Arrow detachable shirt collars, the “Kellogg’s Kids” to promote Kellogg’s Corn Flakes and the “New Year’s Baby” covers for the Post. [DES-12/14]
