About the Artist
Martin Schongauer, German, (c.1450-1491). Martin Schongauer is the most important engraver and draughtsman in German art before Dürer and his designs greatly influenced the development of German art. Though a painter as well, he is best known for his copper engravings.
Schongauer’s painting is characterized by his mastery of the fine detail, primarily rendered through fanciful lines. He specialized in altarpieces and small religious paintings – yet only a few canvases have survived. Most of these works are not authenticated or precisely datable.
