Pig

  1. When people ask
  2. who I think I am
  3. I tell them I grew up
  4. with pigs. I ate
  5. off their fat bellies
  6. slept against their
  7. hairy snouts.
  8. I say all that
  9. as if it explains
  10. things. I’m lying.
  11.
  12. There’s been no pigs
  13. for years: just horses
  14. and some corn.
  15. But when I think
  16. about who I am
  17. or where I’m from
  18. I still see the shape
  19. of their trotters
  20. still feel their solid
  21. hoary skins.
